A NEW DAY
January 1, 1009
Happy New Year Everyone!!
It seems as though the first move everyone makes in a new year is to identify resolutions or goals to achieve….LOSE WEIGHT….MAKE MORE MONEY…BE CLOSE TO GOD…..etc.
I don’t set resolutions and haven’t for quite some time now. Instead of setting resolutions, I choose to reflect on what I’ve learned in the previous year to make corrections in the new year. Being a firm believer of the phrase, “Your past shapes your future”, I feel the only way to ensure my success in 2009 is to apply what I’ve learned in 2008. Makes sense right?
So here’s what I’ve learned in 2008:
1) Are your friends really your “friends” - It’s pretty amazing how the people closest to you REALLY could care less about your success if they aren’t successful themselves. If I’m your friend, I’m your friend. Not because of who you know or what you can do for me, just because I care and I’ll do what I can to make sure you succeed. I’ve learned recently, that isn’t always reciprocated. Duly noted!
2) Hookup = NEVER!! - I learned last year, as I kind of mentioned in my previous post, that “The Hook Up” gets you in trouble. No more and never again! From now on, there are no hookups of any kind! It only leads to headache, frustration and at the end of the day, the person who loses most is “me”.
3) You’re only as successful as you allow yourself to be - If you aren’t willing to be a “game changer”, you won’t be one! “Dare to be GREAT” is the phrase and I dare myself (double dog dare actually)!!
4) Cut Your Losses - Someone wealthy once told me that “success breeds envy, so identify those people right away and cut them off immediately”. Time for me to follow that advice! Cutting as we speak!!
5) Walk in silence - I actually learned this two ways. First, from the wealthy person in the previous point and then watching it happen recently. Its a core fundamental of business. There’s no need to bring fanfare to something that isn’t “concrete”. Once it is, then you can promote with GUSTO because its a reality, not a fantasy or a hope.
6) Remain humble - My late grandmother used to preach humility at all costs. While I’ve fallen short of that at times in my life, I learned its real importance in 2008. In 2009, I plan to heed that wise advice. At the end of the year, I don’t want to be known as the “successful jerk”. God has afforded me some AWESOME relationships this year and the one thing I learned from the “happiest” of the successful people I know….they remain humble. I want to follow in their footsteps.
Hopefully, all of you can apply what you learned in 2008 to make for a more successful 2009!
THE ‘HOOKUP’
November 28, 2008
Welcome to EP Designz v4. Can you believe we’ve been in business 6 1/2 years?? WOW! I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the best and brightest from major film companies to hot, hot music artists, so I consider myself EXTREMELY blessed!
One problem with my chosen profession (we all have problems with our jobs, I’m sure) is that, in my field, everyone wants….’THE HOOKUP’! “Eric, if you do this site for me at no cost, I will promote you”…”Hey, do this for me and I will hook you up with free food”…”E, do this site for me and I will send people your way”…..WHY??
Ok, I’m all for hookups, but can “I” be the one to ask for a hookup? It’s amazing how many people try to get free web services from me and/or my company. What if I went into a car dealership and said “Hey, if you give me this Lexus, I will promote your business on the web”…..Think I’ll actually leave the dealership with the car? More than likely….NOOOO!
This is my occupation. Not a hobby, not something I do for fun (even though web design is great fun). This puts food on my table, clothes on my back and a roof over my head. Same for my design team. Please respect our hustle and leave ‘THE HOOKUP’ at home….This is a place of business!
’till next time!
